Abstract Starting in the spring of 1915, during World War I, some women in unoccupied France volunteered for the role of "war godmothers," marraines de guerre. To provide the moral support these men, so-called "war orphans," could not receive from their families, women in unoccupied areas became their pen pals. Henry Harrisse was a scholar and bibliographer whose particular interest was the discovery of America. He was born in Paris in 1829. The collection consists largely of items removed from books in the Harrisse Collection in Special Collections at Johns Hopkins dating from approximately 1876-1910, as well as correspondence about Harrisse after his death, dating from 1937-1941.

This collection primarily includes the society's earliest correspondence, which documents requests for financial contributions to the newly-formed group, spanning 1970 to 1972.
